Gradara has been elected Italy's most beautiful medieval village for 2018.

Gradara and the Fortress

Gradara is a Medieval village in the Province of Pesaro and Urbino, on the hill between the Marche and Emilia Romagna. Over the years Gradara stood out for its beauty and gained several recognitions. In the Renaissance many powerful families conquered and ruled Gradara: Malatesta, Sforza, Borgia and Della Rovere.
The Castle, dates back to the period between 11th and 15th centuries, is one of the most visited monuments in the region and is the scene of museum events, musical and artistic. The Fortress, symbol of the city, is protected by two walls, the outermost of which extends for almost 800 meters, making it the imposing structure. Nowadays it is possible to stroll on the 300 meters panoramic walk and, from the tower, enjoy the breath-taking panorama with the Marche pleasant hills, and on the other side gaze upon the Romagna coast until you lose yourself on the Adriatic Sea horizon.
The last important restoration carried out in 1920 brought the castle back to its ancient magnificence.

According to the legend, the moving story of Paolo (Malatesta) and Francesca (Da Rimini), the unlucky lovers immortalized by the poet Dante Alighieri in the Canto V of his “Divine Comedy,” took place within the walls of Gradara Castle. Come and see with your eyes the setting of this love and its tragic ending.
